Three Arrested Including Man with Handgun as Necklace

For Immediate Release:  October 10, 2019

On October 9, 2019, three were arrested including a man that assaulted an officer and found with a handgun around his neck.

At 4:18 pm, Detectives Nick Berardis and Alberto Valles of the Special Investigations Section approached a vehicle in the unit south block of Tennessee Avenue in reference to a narcotic investigation.  Detective Valles approached the driver, Anthony Gallipoli, who was in the process of smoking crack cocaine from a pipe.  Gallipoli was removed from the vehicle and arrested.

Detective Berardis observed the back passenger, Khalil Tate, stuffing a package in his pocket.  Tate was removed from the vehicle and the bag, which contained cocaine, was removed from his pocket.  After being told he was under arrest, Tate tried to run away.  Detective Berardis was able to grab hold of Tate as he fled and was struck in the face by a Tate elbow.  With assistance from Detective Valles, Tate was taken to the ground where he again elbowed Detective Berardis in the face causing a laceration.  Tate resisted arrest and continued to refuse to release his left hand from underneath his body.  After a prolonged struggle, he was taken into custody.  While searching Tate after his arrest, he was found to have a loaded handgun tied around his neck with a shoelace.  The shoelace went through the gun’s trigger guard and hung like a necklace.  Tate was also found in possession of 54 ecstasy pills and two bags of heroin.
