Traffic Stop Leads To Major Fentanyl Seizure

On September 11, 2019, around 11:00 p.m., Beavercreek Police Officer Joel Schuler conducted a traffic stop for speeding on U.S. 35 at N. Fairfield Road. Detecting a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, Officer Schuler requested K-9 Officer David Majercak to conduct a vehicle sniff.  K-9 Hans positively alerted for narcotics, prompting officers to further search the vehicle’s interior, where they discovered several bricks of a powdery substance. With the assistance of Sergeant Nick Amato and Officer Katie Gee, officers recovered 1,046.92 grams of Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid and Schedule II narcotic. The driver, Jasmine C. Purifoy, 25, from Michigan, was incarcerated and indicted on two counts, both F-1 felonies: Possession of a Fentanyl-related compound and Trafficking in a Fentanyl-related compound. The maximum penalty is mandatory prison time of 19 to 24-1/2 years.

Approximately 2mg of Fentanyl is a lethal dose and the seized amount contained approximately 500,000 lethal doses.  This considerable quantity could have led to catastrophic consequences if distributed throughout the area, posing immeasurable risk to the local community.  The officers' intuition and training, along with their keen powers of observation, were instrumental in getting this highly lethal drug off our local streets. It is the department’s mission to safeguard the life and property of our community, as well to maintain safety and order, and this recent incident is a major step in removing drugs and traffickers off our streets.

“I congratulate our officers and our K-9 unit for their exceptional police work,” said Police Chief Dennis Evers. “I am relieved no one was exposed to this lethal drug during this traffic stop. This incident is a sober reminder of the serious risks to the public, first responders and K-9 units who come in contact with these types of drugs. We will remain vigilant in our efforts to keep these drugs off of our streets and eliminate potential life threatening risks to our communities.”
