EPD officers assaulted and involved in shooting

At about 1 AM officers of the Elizabethton Police Department responded to a call for service on Hattie Avenue regarding a male subject in a residence unauthorized and in violation of an order of protection.  Officers were attacked in the residence by the male subject with a metal object.  During the assault on officers, officers first attempted to use non-lethal force on the subject but he continued to assault officers with the object.  Officers had to shoot the subject to stop the assault.  One officer was transported by EMS to a local hospital and treated for injuries; that officer has been released from the hospital at this time.  The other officer was checked at the scene for minor injuries.  The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.  The TBI was called and is investigating, as is protocol for an officer involved shooting.  The scene is safe, however Hattie Avenue is closed while TBI continues the investigation.  Media may stage in the parking lot of Elizabethton City Hall.  TBI should be contacted for further information.
