$1.5 Million in Marijuana Confiscated with Arrest

A plan to send more than 190 pounds of marijuana through the mail was intercepted by the Panama City Police Department, resulting in more than $1 million in drugs removed from the streets.

In late January, officers with the Panama City Police Department responded to the UPS Store on 23rd Street where employees had noticed three large boxes emitting the odor of marijuana. PCPD’s K-9 officer responded to the scene and alerted on the presence of marijuana.

Members of the PCPD’s Street Crimes Unit began an investigation the following day, and during that investigation, stopped a passenger van that witnesses had identified attempting to pick up the large boxes from the day before. Officers initiated a traffic stop, and noticed the odor of marijuana emitting from the van.

The driver of the van provided a Pennsylvania driver’s license that proved to be counterfeit. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, investigators found four more boxes in the back seat, with marijuana packaged in a similar manner. In all, seven large packing boxes were mailed to the suspect. Crime Scene investigators and Street Crimes Unit investigators estimated the street value of the drugs at $1.5 million.

The driver of the vehicle, Yunqing Wang, O/M, 31, was charged with trafficking in marijuana, possessing a counterfeit driver’s license, providing a false ID to a law enforcement officer and possession of narcotic equipment. He was booked into the Bay County Jail.
